  • March 8, 2010: International Women's Day
  • Press Release: International Day of Women

Today March 8, 2010, the world pays tribute to famous women and their role in the social balance. This day is unfortunately also a time to recall the inequalities and discrimination that they still suffer in our modern societies. Thus, throughout this symbolic day, women will speak, arise and invest public spaces to reflect the status of women around the world.

The finding that none can draw is that many efforts are still needed for women to fully enjoy the right to security and compliance in the public space in the professional sphere and in the private sphere where too many Women are still victims of domestic violence ; the right to dignity against poverty which continues to be a woman's face.

Moreover, when depriving women the right to integrity is inconceivable, the Muslim woman is in a good part of our European societies, subject to a double stigma, that of a preconceived image in the diffuse society, based on an outdated reality, and a rigid institutional protectionism, under the influence of a canonization of a single model for empowerment of women, so that this world is marked by the diversity of identities that must be flourish while meeting on common values and shared; the right to freedom of expression, commitment and personal choice against any kind of diktat; the right to education without condition, equal to work and equal opportunities, against all forms of discrimination. In this day of celebration, the European Forum of Muslim Women recalls the importance of the struggle of women to claim their rights.

More than ever, women of all persuasions, but also men upholding justice, must rally together to advocate and defend the causes they hold dear. The collective strength and unity that flow out of this social movement can only lead to the creation of an egalitarian society where each and everyone of us found the place it rightfully.

The European Forum of Muslim Women recalls that Islam has guaranteed women a unique role in family and society. Muslims are called to live its values in their reality and express faithfully the interest of humanity.
