The first veiled Moslem Member of Parliament
On June 23rd, 2009, the first veiled Moslem Member of Parliament will make her entry at the Parliament of Brussels. Mahinur Ozdemir, 26 years, was elected on June 7th, 2009 for the Belgian regional elections with 2851 preference votes.
Graduated in public administration, she is since 2006 communal adviser within the commune of Schaerbeek in the region of Brussels and employed in the Permanent Center for Citizenship and Participation. She wants to commit herself in representing all the inhabitants of Brussels and foresees to focus her parliamentary work on the problem of unemployment particularly of young people.
Let us hope that her election will represent an additional step towards more openness and tolerance and towards a better representation of the Belgian population, in its diversity, within the public authorities.
